A pointSEM is a used scanning electron microscope from a renowned manufacturer (e.g., ZEISS, Philips/FEI/Thermo Fisher) that has been comprehensively modernized by us, point electronic.
Through the modernization process, a classic used electron microscope is transformed into a pointSEM: The proven electron-optical column is retained, while the electronics, control system, and software are completely replaced and brought up to the latest state of the art.
pointSEMs combine the reliability of proven electron columns with modern high-performance technology:

The key point is this: A pointSEM is not a conventionally refurbished electron microscope, but rather a system that has been technically rebuilt from the ground up with a modern platform and long-term maintainability.
pointSEMs offer the performance, reliability, and ease of use of modern new instruments, based on the latest electronics, software, and automation. At the same time, users benefit from the mechanical stability of proven column designs and technologies.
As part of the pointSEM process, the SEMs undergo modifications that go well beyond a standard refurbishment:
- Complete replacement of the original control electronics
- Installation of new point electronic electronics, controllers, and software
- Modern scanning and image acquisition systems (e.g., DISS6)
- New control panels (e.g., trackball or joystick)
- Enhanced automation of microscope functions

Why are pointSEMs more expensive than standard used equipment? pointSEMs are more than just used or refurbished microscopes. The higher price is due to:

Before modernization, our experts inspect the electron microscopes for defects and, if necessary, repair and service them. Damaged components are replaced, and wear parts are changed. Afterward, the point electronic electronics and software are installed, along with other components. Finally, our experts conduct a comprehensive, standardized functional test in which all processes and functions are run through and verified, from loading the sample to scanning with multiple detectors to venting the chamber again.
pointSEMs are used electron microscopes that have been fully refurbished. Most importantly, however, they are equipped with the very latest hardware and software from point electronic, which we have used to completely replace the old components. The user interface runs on a Windows 11 PC. The entire system thus meets all standard IT security requirements, making it network-ready and easy to integrate into existing infrastructures. You can find a comparative overview here. With competing products, the equipment is merely refurbished to its original condition - it is not modernized.
Of course, you can have your device configured to your requirements or purchase additional analytical equipment, new or refurbished pumps and chillers, as well as other instruments. You’ll find an overview under each device listed.
We usually have a few finished units in stock. This allows us to guarantee a relatively short delivery time when needed. However, as a general rule, once all technical details have been clarified, we plan to deliver the finished unit within 12–16 weeks. Please contact us.
In addition to the microscope (excluding peripherals), the purchase price of a pointSEM generally includes shipping, installation, and training. Upon request, we can arrange additional services as well as maintenance and service options tailored precisely to your needs.
We personally deliver and set up every pointSEM. In some cases, we also use an experienced, specialized shipping service provider, for example, when there are specific delivery date requests or similar circumstances. The transport of our electron microscopes is always insured.
Warranty and Guarantee
The following warranty periods apply when purchasing a pointSEM:
- For private individuals: 24 months on new parts; 12 months on used parts
- For companies: 12 months on new parts; 6 months on used parts
Yes. As a customer, you naturally have all legal warranty claims upon acceptance of the device, even in the case of hire purchase.
A warranty claim exists only if a warranty has been explicitly agreed upon.
Please refer to the respective warranty declaration for details on scope, duration, and conditions.
A warranty does not cover damages caused by:
- normal wear and tear,
- improper use,
- unauthorized modifications or repairs,
- external influences for which we are not responsible.
Service
We offer our services for standard maintenance, repair, or emergency support either as flat-rate maintenance contracts or on demand on a call-off basis to our customers.
You can also conclude a maintenance contract with us for your pointSEM for regular inspections, maintenance, and troubleshooting - tailored individually to your needs regarding duration and budget. Possible services include:
- On-site or remote support
- Coverage of all repairs and emergency interventions within the agreed period (labor and/or replacement and wear parts)
- Inspection, assessment, maintenance, cleaning, functional tests, adjustment, as well as replacement of hardware and components
Device Purchase
First, please fill out our inquiry form with the basic details. In the first step, we will perform an evaluation based on your documents and then get in touch with you. If we reach an agreement, we will sign a purchase contract and collect the device.
In principle, we review every purchase offer. However, we reserve the right to reject offers if a particular device does not align with our portfolio.
No, we only purchase used scanning electron microscopes. Please note that we do NOT buy light microscopes or TEMs.
Yes, in certain cases we also purchase individual parts of electron microscopes, for example if the condition of the device does not justify a complete purchase. We usually determine this as part of our evaluation process. Do you have a device that might be suitable? Then please use our inquiry form.
We take care of the shipping to us (point electronic) for you. The effort required for this is generally compensated by the purchase price of your used electron microscope.
The uninstallation is carried out by point electronic and is generally compensated within the purchase price of your used electron microscope.
Basically no. We only handle disposal in accordance with ElektroG waste law and the European WEEE directive for hardware and electron microscopes that we manufacture and sell.
In individual cases and after consultation, this is possible.
